Serums and creams, what’s the difference?

The basic difference between facial serums and creams is their formulation. Indeed, while serums are water based, creams are emulsions of lipidic-based and water-based components, so in the face cream the lipidic component prevails.

This has as a consequence that the serums have lighter texture and that they absorb quickly in the skin. On the other hand, the serums lack that lipidic component that has also the function of a protective barrier against external agents.

This very easily explains the basic and major reasons why you always need a cream after the serum and why the serum has to be applied before the cream.
