Lips skin is different

The skin of our lips is different in some ways from the skin of the rest of our face.

Unlike the skin on the rest of the face, the lip skin has no hair or sweat glands. Additionally, the non‐keratinized epithelium of the lip skin is directly exposed to the external environment as the lips’ skin has no oil glands. These makes the lip skin more exposed to dry conditions than skin on the other areas of the body. The lip skin has a higher transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and lower water content than skin on the cheeks or other parts of the face. Also, it has no oil glands and this makes it much more exposed to dryness, flakiness and peeling.

All the products that you’ve been using so far have a significant lipidic component, that protects the lips creating a barrier effect but, most often, do noy hydrate the lips skin and do not rebalance the transepidermal water loss to which this so delicate part of our face is exposed to.
