A cleanser helps to remove dirt, makeup and impurities by cleaning the skin, while an exfoliator removes dead skin cells that can clog pores. Using an exfoliator is a more efficient way of cleansing your skin and helps with absorption of other products. Exfoliating is helpful for acne prevention and for creating radiant looking skin, but, as in all things, moderation is key and attention to something as precious as our skin is paramount.
ExfoliationOur skin undergoes a natural turnover cycle every 28 days. What happens is that the upper layer of our skin (epidermis) sheds, revealing new skin from the middle layer of our skin (dermis). However, the cell turnover cycle isn’t always so clear-cut. Sometimes, dead skin cells don’t fully shed, leading to flaky skin, dry patches, and clogged pores. This is when helping your body shed these cells through exfoliation is good. Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells with a substance or tool known as an exfoliator. Exfoliators come in many forms, from chemical treatments to brushes. The point is that exfoliators can cause skin irritation, redness, bumps and dry skin, especially if used too often. Make sure not to over-exfoliate; exfoliating a few times a week is ideal. So, merging cleansing (which is good doing twice a day, in the morning and in the evening) to remove dirt and makeup, with exfoliating to remove dead cells, may create issues to your skin!
What products should you use?As always there is not a one size fits all and the focus has always to be on which characteristics your skin has. Let’s see the different types of exfoliation. First, we have to distinguish between chemical and mechanical exfoliation. Though counterintuitive, chemical exfoliation is gentler than the mechanical one. Chemical exfoliation can be with: – Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) like glycolic acid, citric acid, mailc acid and lactic acid, ingredients that help to dissolve dead skin cells on the surface of your face, – Beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) like salicylic acid that remove dead skin cells from deep in your pores, – Enzymes that remove dead skin cells without exposing a fresh layer of skin, resulting especially good option for people with sensitive skin. Mechanical exfoliation works by physically removing dead skin rather than dissolving it and can be done with: – Exfoliating powders that use fine particles to both absorb oil and remove dead skin, – Dry brushing using soft bristles to brush dead skin cells away. You should only use this method on skin that’s free of any small cuts or irritation, – Washcloth, with normal skin you may be able to exfoliate just by drying your face with a washcloth. After washing your face, gently move a soft washcloth in small circles to remove dead skin cells and dry your face.
